PATA: The Ribbon Cable Regime
PATA is a retrospective name.
Nobody in the early IDE era said “Parallel ATA” with solemn precision while installing a 540 MB disk in a beige tower. They said IDE, or ATA, or “the hard drive cable.”
Only after SATA arrived did the old parallel regime need a new name.
History often names the old king after the coup.
I. What PATA Means
PATA means Parallel ATA.
It describes the original parallel electrical and cable form of ATA, as distinct from Serial ATA.

PATA is the ribbon cable age.

II. The Cable
Classic PATA used a 40-pin connector.
Early cables had 40 conductors. Later high-speed Ultra DMA modes required 80-conductor cables, still with 40-pin connectors. The extra wires were grounds placed between signal lines to reduce crosstalk.

III. Two Devices, One Channel
A PATA channel could host up to two devices.
Traditionally they were configured as:

- device 1
The older language called these master and slave, a terminology choice that later generations correctly found unnecessary and ugly.

This meant storage installation often involved:
- reading tiny labels on a drive
- moving a plastic jumper
- discovering the diagram was printed upside down
- rebooting into disappointment
IV. PIO, DMA, and UDMA
PATA evolved through transfer modes.
At first, Programmed I/O made the CPU heavily involved. Later DMA modes let devices transfer data with less CPU babysitting. Ultra DMA improved timing and added CRC protection for transfers.

The jump from CPU-supervised movement to DMA was not cosmetic. It changed how much of the machine had to stop and carry disk traffic by hand.

V. The Airflow Crime
PATA ribbon cables were wide.
They blocked airflow. They folded badly. They turned clean case interiors into fabric banners for the Ministry of Heat Retention.
Rounded IDE cables appeared later as aftermarket relief, but the standard image remains:

This is one reason SATA felt modern even before the speed mattered.
One thin serial cable looked like liberation.
VI. Why PATA Endured
PATA endured because it was cheap, familiar, and everywhere.
It carried:
- hard disks
- optical drives through ATAPI
- removable bays
- CompactFlash adapters
For years, if a PC had storage, PATA was nearby.

VII. The Real Story (Suppressed)
Officially, PATA means Parallel ATA.
The suppressed expansion was Parallel Attachment To Anxiety.
This was printed on no box but understood by every technician who opened a case and found:
- one disk set to master
- one optical drive set to master
- one 40-wire cable where an 80-conductor cable was required
- the BIOS reporting nothing
Parallelism was not the hard part. Human configuration was.
VIII. The Lesson
PATA was the practical face of ATA for a whole generation of PCs.
It gave commodity machines cheap storage, optical drives, and a standard upgrade path.
It also gave them ribbon cables, jumpers, and a lesson that parallel buses eventually become signal-integrity negotiations with a connector attached.
SATA did not need to be perfect. It only needed to be thin, serial, and free of jumper theology.
